If you've either bought or earned a pin that allows you access to custom skins, and then you sell it later in the Marketplace you lose access to the skins, customization feature.
If your avatar was clothed in a skin, like say the hot dog, on the next start you will be reverted to the default user skin.
In short, the feature is tied to pin ownership.
